A Relatively Prime Day

Yesterday was the first day of the teaching presentations in my class. We all get to teach the class one chapter of pretty basic math: Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2. The catch is, though, that as we teach there are people on missions to make the class time slightly more difficult. It was really hilarious to see people carry out their missions; for example, Jon had to listen to music and pretend to not pay attention to Shayna’s lesson. The goal is really to see how we would handle it as teachers. The rest of the day was focused on getting introduced to number theory, but we didn’t get to go too in depth into it until today.

There was also SOFT time yesterday, but most of that was taken up by the walk to-and-from Barnes and Noble. It wasn't all that exciting but when my friends and I got back to the Commons we had a massive Proctor Group Meeting with another Proctor group.

Today the two lessons weren’t as funny or as eventful as the ones yesterday, but they were still interesting and the lesson on exponent rules helped a lot as we continued on number theory.  There is a whole lot to learn and understand about number theory, a branch of math that was once considered very inapplicable. Turns out, what protects everyone’s credit card numbers when they online shop is actually number theory. I thought that was pretty interesting.

After arête and free time, I met up with my proctor group for Proctor Group Night. We all dressed up really cute for the group photo and walked to Café Coco, a slightly sketchy looking café near Elliston Place. We all crammed into the rather small entrance of the establishment and tried to pick something to eat. I was personally very interested in the variety of desserts and Italian cream sodas they had to offer.

I ended up getting a chocolate chip cookie (it had a generous amount of chocolate chunks), a vanilla tiramisu cream soda, and a turkey pesto Panini. It was all courtesy of VSA, which kind of makes it even better. As our food was getting made, we found out it was singer-songwriter night. Café Coco along with the Bluebird Café, which I visited almost 2 weeks ago now, started the tradition of open mic night for up and coming singer-songwriters. Unfortunately, we couldn’t stay for the live music but the food was really good and it was a good time with Sasha and the rest of my group.

We walked back to the Commons to have our Proctor Group Meeting with ice cream out on the patio, and it went by pretty quickly. Afterward, I started throwing a Frisbee around with Isabel and it resulted in a very entertaining game of Frisbee with about 10 other people. I’m still pretty bad at throwing and catching a Frisbee, but there is a first time for everything.
